Pixel Gingerbread House



This tutorial was written by Monti on November 14th 2007. It's concept is copyrighted to Monti. Any creation you make from my ideas are yours. For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

The Following Colour Chart 
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.


 

We will be be making the Gingerbead House shown above. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
We are doing the main outline in 2 parts starting with the main image below.





















Ok we are ready to start.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

Step 1:
Open a new image 150 x 150 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 2 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA) and start to draw the outline shown, changing colours as you go. I started with the snow on the roof of the house.

When you have done that part use the guide below to do the bottom of the house.
NOTE: The parts in PINK are the parts you already drew from the first outline.













Step 2: House Fills
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the main area of the house.



Set your foreground to colour 5 (#9E4312) on your colour chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 30
Shadow colour: Use colour 1 on the colour chart (#672704).
Before deselecting add a texture effect if you want. I used Canvas Fine, size 25%.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the chimney of the house.
Flood fill this selection with colour 5 on your colour chart (#9E4312). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 8
Shadow colour: Use colour 1 on the colour chart (#672704).
Add the same texture effect.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the door.
Flood fill this selection with colour 5 on your colour chart (#9E4312). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 13
Shadow colour: Use colour 1 on the colour chart (#672704).
Add the same texture effect.
Deselect.

Step 3: Snow and Door Fills
Select your magic wand and click inside the snow on the roof.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 10
Shadow colour: Use colour 2 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA).
Add noise - uniform and monochrome checked - 5%
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the snow on the chimney.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 8
Shadow colour: Use colour 2 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA).
Add noise - uniform and monochrome checked - 5%
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the door frame.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use colour 2 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA).
Add noise - uniform and monochrome checked - 5%
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the door knob.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use colour 2 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA).
REPEAT cutout twice.
Deselect.

Step 4: Stripes
Select your magic wand and click inside one of the red stripes on the side of the house.
Flood fill this selection with colour 7 on your colour chart (#C80505). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use colour 1 on the colour chart (#672704).
Deselect.

Repeat for all the other red stripes.

Select your magic wand and click inside one of the white stripes on the side of the house.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use colour 4 on the colour chart (#CEC0B2).
Deselect.

Repeat for all the other white stripes.

Save as a psp file and minimize the house for now while we make the decorations.

Step 5: Sweets
The Sweet Colour Chart.
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.





Open a new image 50 x 50 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the same settings we used earlier.
Set your foreground to colour 3 on the colour chart (#DCDAEA) and start to draw the outline shown below.









When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the same settings we used earlier and click inside the sweet. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 4 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use the sweet outline (#DCDAEA).
Deselect.
___________________________________________

Add a new raster layer. 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the colour chart (#972121) and start to draw the outline shown below.








Select your magic wand and click inside the red area.
Flood fill this selection with colour 2 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 16
Shadow colour: Use the outline (#972121).
Deselect.

Add a new raster layer. 
Set your foreground to colour 5 on the colour chart (#066903) and start to draw the outline shown below.








Merge all visible.

Maximize your house and copy and paste the sweet as a new layer on the house. 
Duplicate the sweet 5 times for a total of 6 sweets and arrange them on your house as shown in my tag above. 
Add a slight Drop Shadow to each sweet. I used
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 60
Blur: 3
Colour: Black

Merge all visible and save as a psp file. Minimize the house for now while we make the rest of the decorations.

Step 6: Heart
Open a new image 50 x 50 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the same settings we used earlier.
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the Sweet colour chart above (#972121) and start to draw the outline shown below.










When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the same settings we used earlier and click inside the heart. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 2 on the Sweet colour chart above (#C80505). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 11
Shadow colour: Use the heart outline (#972121).
DO NOT deselect.
Add a new raster layer.
Select your paintbrush - size 7 - colour white.
Add a white dot on each side of the heart.
Go to Adjust - Blur - Gaussian Blur - Radius 3.
Deselect.
Merge all visible.

Maximize your house and copy and paste the heart as a new layer on the house. Position in the middle above the door. See my tag for a guide.
Add a slight Drop Shadow. I used
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 60
Blur: 3
Colour: White

Merge all visible and save as a psp file. Minimize the house for now while we make the rest of the decorations.

Step 7: Lollipops
The Lollipop Colour Chart
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.





Open a new image 100 x 50 transparent.
Select the brush tool and change the size back to 1.
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the colour chart (#64187C) and start to draw the outline shown below changing to colour 5 (#672704) to do the stick.





















When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the same settings we used earlier and click inside the lollipop. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 2 on your colour chart (#AA7ABD). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings Vertical= 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 12
Shadow colour: Use the lollipop outline (#64187C).
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the lolly stick.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#9E4312). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use colour 5 on the colour chart (#672704).
Deselect.

Draw another lollipop with the same settings but change the lollipop outline to colour 3 on your colour chart (#1B4C1A) and the fill to colour 4 on your colour chart (#8CC78D).
Go to Image - Mirror.

Maximize your house and copy and paste each of the lollipops as a new layer on the house. Position one either side of the door. See my tag for a guide.

Merge all visible and save as a psp file. Minimize the house for now while we make the snow base.

Step 8: Base
The Base Colour Chart
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.






Open a new image 150 x 50 transparent.
Select the brush tool size 1.
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the colour chart (#CBC8DE) and start to draw the outline shown below.







When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the same settings we used earlier and click inside the ground. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 2 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF - White). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings 
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 16
Shadow colour: Use the ground outline (#CBC8DE).
Add noise - uniform and monochrome checked - 5%
Deselect.

Maximize your house and copy and paste this as a new layer on your house and position. Move this layer to the bottom.

Merge all visible and save as a png.
