Pixel Candy Cane

For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

The Following Colour Chart 
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.
Ok we are ready to start.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

We will be be making the Candy Cane and Bow shown above. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
I have done the outline in 2 parts, we will be starting with the Cane.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
Step 1: Cane Outline
Open a new image 150 x 150 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the outline colour chart (#6F3334) and start drawing your outline.
Start with the top left corner of the cane.
Change the colours when shown on the outline.
The white stripes are done in colour 2 on your colour chart (#CEC0B2).

Step 2: Red Fills
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the red section at the bottom of the cane (above the end white section). 
Flood fill this selection with colour 3 on your colour chart (#AB4F5E). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: -2
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your red cane outline.(#6F3334)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Repeat this step with the same settings for the next 4 red sections working up from the bottom.

When you get to the top red section (3rd red section from the left) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 3 on your colour chart (#AB4F5E). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 2
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your red cane outline.(#6F3334)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

When you get to the top left red section (2nd red section from the left) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 3 on your colour chart (#AB4F5E). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your red cane outline.(#6F3334)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

When you get to the left red section (the final red section) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 3 on your colour chart (#AB4F5E). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 2
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your red cane outline.(#6F3334)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 3: White Fills
Change your foreground to colour 4 on the colour chart (#FFFFFF).
Select your magic wand and click inside the bottom white section of the cane. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 4 on the colour chart (#FFFFFF). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: -2
Opacity: 80
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your white cane outline.(#CEC0B2)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Repeat this step with the same settings for the next 4 white sections working up from the bottom.

When you get to the top right white section (3rd white section from the left) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 4 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 2
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 80
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your white cane outline.(#CEC0B2)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

When you get to the top white section (2nd white section from the left) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 4 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 2
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 80
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your white cane outline.(#CEC0B2)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

When you get to the left white section (the final white section) click inside with your magic wand,
Flood fill this selection with colour 4 on your colour chart (#FFFFFF). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 2
Opacity: 80
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your white cane outline.(#CEC0B2)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 4: Bow Outline
Add a new raster layer. 
Set your foreground to colour 5 on the outline colour chart (#4E6451) and start drawing the outline shown below.
Step 5: Bow Fills
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand and click inside left top section of the bow.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#83BE8C). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -1
Horizontal: -2
Opacity: 100
Blur: 11
Shadow colour: Use your bow outline.(#4E6451)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Repeat for the top right section of the bow.

Select your magic wand and click inside the left underneath section of the bow.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#83BE8C). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -1
Horizontal: -2
Opacity: 100
Blur: 14
Shadow colour: Use your bow outline.(#4E6451)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
DO NOT Deselect.
Go to Adjust Brightness - Contrast and adjust the brightness to -20, contrast 0. 
Deselect.

Repeat for the right underneath section of the bow.

Select your magic wand and click inside the left hanging ribbon of the bow.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#83BE8C). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -2
Horizontal: -4
Opacity: 100
Blur: 14
Shadow colour: Use your bow outline.(#4E6451)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside both of the right sections of the hanging ribbon of the bow.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#83BE8C). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -2
Horizontal: -3
Opacity: 100
Blur: 11
Shadow colour: Use your bow outline.(#4E6451)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the center knot of the bow.
Flood fill this selection with colour 6 on your colour chart (#83BE8C). 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 10
Shadow colour: Use your bow outline.(#4E6451)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 6:
Lower the opacity of the bow slightly and erase the parts of the left ribbon that cover the cane, so it looks like that part of the ribbon goes behind the cane.

Merge all visible and save as a png.
