Pixel Dragon

This tutorial was written by Monti on January 5th 2007. It's concept is copyrighted to Monti. Any creation you make from my ideas are yours. For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

This is a more advanced tutorial.
I am not supplying colour charts as the dragon should be whatever colour you want.

The outline guide has been broken down into 3 parts. 
Draw your outline using Darker colours of your choice, changing colours where I change colours on the outline chart.
NOTE:  The parts shown in red are the parts you have already drawn from the first outline.

Ok we are ready to start.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

Step 1:
We will be be making the dragon shown below. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
I have done the outline in 3 parts.
Start with the top half of the Dragon.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
Open a new image 200 x 200 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to the dark colour you want for his horn outline (The one on the top of his head).
Continue doing all of the outline, changing colours as you go, where I have changed colours on the outline.

Step 2:
Once your outline is complete we need to do the fill and cutouts.
Select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the head.
Fill with a light shade of the colour you used for the outline.
Keep selected.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 15
Shadow colour: Use your head/body outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
REPEAT cutout.
Add Noise with the following settings.
Deselect.

Step 3:
Select your magic wand and click inside his foot 
Fill with the same colour.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 9
Shadow colour: Use your head/body outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
REPEAT cutout.
Add Noise with the same settings we used above.
Deselect.

Step 4:
Select your magic wand and click inside his wing. 
Fill with the same colour.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 9
Shadow colour: Use your head/body outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
REPEAT cutout.
Add Noise with the same settings we used above.
Deselect.

Step 5:
Select your magic wand and click inside one of the lines on his stomach. 
Fill with a light shade of the colour you used for the stomach lines outline.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 6
Shadow colour: Use your stomach lines outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Repeat this for all the lines in his stomach and the underneath of his tail.
Zoom in really close to select any stray pixels.

Step 6:
Select your magic wand and click inside the large horn at the top of his head. 
Fill with a light shade of the colour you used for the horn outline.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 11
Shadow colour: Use your horn outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 7:
Select your magic wand and click inside the large horn at the back of his head. 
Fill with the same colour.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 10
Shadow colour: Use your horn outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 8:
Select your magic wand and click inside one of the other horns. 
Fill with the same colour.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your horn outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 

Repeat for all other horns.

Step 9:
Select your magic wand and click inside the large parts of his eyes (Outer eyes). 
Fill with white.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 35
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: #040404.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Fill the center of the eyes with black, then add a small 1 pixel dot using your paintbrush in the direction you want him to look.

Optional

If you want to you can add a new layer and draw some shapes on his tail using your body outline colour. Select your magic wand and click these shapes. 
Fill with a light contrasting colour.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Body Outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Merge all visible and save as a png.
