Pixel Santa

This tutorial was written by Monti on November 24th 2006. It's concept is copyrighted to Monti. Any creation you make from my ideas are yours. You may print out this tutorial for your own personal use, but please do not copy it in any way to put online, pass out or rewrite without my permission or worse yet attempt to claim as your own.

For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

The Following Colour Chart 
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.
Ok we are ready to start.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

We will be be making the Santa shown above. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
I have done the outline in 2 parts, we will be starting with the top half of Santa.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
I will show you how to draw the eyes at the end.
The colours used for the outline are listed below.

Santa Suit Outline: #9C2E2E (Colour 1)
Fur Trim Outline: #DEC29E (Colour 2)
Beard and Eyebrows Outline: #EDD0BB (Colour 3)
Nose and Face Outline: #CA8368 (Colour 4)
Belt Buckle: #CB9759 (Colour 5)
Belt, Button and Boot Uppers: #404040 (Colour 6)
Boot Soles, Belt and Boot Fill: #000000 (Colour 7 Black)
Eye Highlights: #808080 (Colour 8)
Santa Suit Fill: #FF0000 (Colour 9)
Beard and Fur Fill: #FFFFFF (Colour 10 White)

Step 1:
Open a new image 100 x 100 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the outline colour chart (#9C2E2E) and start at the top center of your canvas.
Start with the Santa Hat and begin drawing your outline.
Change the colours when shown on the outline and use the outline guide above as well if you need to.

Step 2:
Change your foreground back to colour 1 on the outline colour chart (#9C2E2E) and draw in the rest of the outline shown below.
Change the colours when shown on the outline and use the outline guide above as well if you need to.
NOTE: The parts shown in BLUE and the parts you have already drawn from the first outline.
The very bottom 7 pixels and the 1 pixel either side of them are done in BLACK the rest of the boot outline is done in #404040 (Colour 6)
Step 3: Suit Fills
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the top section of the Hat, make sure you select the single pixels to the left and right of the hat. 
Select colour 9 (#FF0000) on your colour chart and flood fill this selection. Keep using that colour for all fills in this step. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 85
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your hat outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the part of the hat near the bobble. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 9.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 2
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 71
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your hat outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the right glove. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 9.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your glove outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 
Repeat for the other glove.

Select your magic wand and click inside the santa suit ABOVE the belt. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 9.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your suit outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout twice (for a total of 3 times) before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the santa suit BELOW the belt. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 9.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your suit outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the right trouser leg making sure you click inside the single pixel at the top of the leg. 
Flood fill this selection with colour 9.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your suit outline.(#9C2E2E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect. 
Repeat for the other trouser leg.

Step 4: Fur Trim Fills
Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the hat trim. 
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur:2
Shadow colour: Use your Fur Trim Outline (#DEC29E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the hat bobble. 
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your Fur Trim Outline (#DEC29E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the right cuff trim, making sure you select the single pixels above and below the glove. 
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your Fur Trim Outline (#DEC29E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect. 
Repeat for the other cuff trim.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the right coat trim.
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your Fur Trim Outline (#DEC29E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the right boot trim.
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your Fur Trim Outline (#DEC29E)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout once before deselecting.
Deselect. 
Repeat for the other boot trim.

Step 5: Beard
Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the beard.
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your Beard Outline (#EDD0BB)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout twice (for a total of 3 times) before deselecting.
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside both parts of the moustache.
Fill with colour 10 (White) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your Beard Outline (#EDD0BB)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 6: Belt and Button
Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the button and the belt buckle.
Floodfill with Black and Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside both parts of the belt.
Fill with colour 7 (Black) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -1
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 70
Blur: 1
Shadow colour: Use your Belt Outline (#404040)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside all 3 parts of the right boot as shown below.
Fill with colour 7 (Black) on your colour chart.
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your Boot Outline (#404040)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 
Repeat for the other boot.

Step 7: Face and Eyes
Zoom in on your image and use the guide below to draw in your eyes. 
Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the face.
Fill with colour 11 (#FED8CB) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your Face Outline (#CA8368)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand with the same settings and click inside the nose.
Fill with colour 11 (#FED8CB) on your colour chart.
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 2
Shadow colour: Use your Face Outline (#CA8368)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Merge all visible and save as a png.
