Pixel Noel

This tutorial was written by Monti on November 29th 2006. It's concept is copyrighted to Monti. Any creation you make from my ideas are yours. For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

The Following Colour Chart 
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.
The Following Pattern Fills
NOTE: These backgrounds were made by me please DO NOT share them anywhere else.
Left click each one in turn and when it opens right click then save as, then open in PSP.
    

Ok we are ready to start.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

We will be be making the Noel shown above. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
We will be doing each letter individually and putting them together at the end.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.

Step 1: N

Open a new image 100 x 100 transparent. 

Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the outline colour chart (#BA692A) and start at the top center of your canvas.
Draw the outline for the N using the guide above.

When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the N.
Flood fill this selection with the Gold Holly Fill, making sure the size is at 75. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 7
Shadow colour: Use your N outline.(#BA692A)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout and Deselect.

Step 2: O
Open a new image 100 x 100 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 2 on the outline colour chart (#BD3027) and start at the top center of your canvas.
Draw the outline for the O using the guide above.

Select your magic wand and click inside the O.
Flood fill this selection with the Star Fill, making sure the size is at 50. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your O outline.(#BD3027)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Repeat cutout and Deselect.

Step 3: E
Open a new image 100 x 100 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 3 on the outline colour chart (#465682) and start at the top center of your canvas.
Draw the outline for the E using the guide above.

Select your magic wand and click inside the E.
Flood fill this selection with #7885B0. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 9
Shadow colour: Use your E outline.(#465682)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 4: L
Open a new image 100 x 100 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 5 on the outline colour chart (#E9D7D7) and start at the top left light part of your L.
Continue doing the outline changing colours as shown.
Draw the outline for the L using the guide above.
NOTE: The light parts are colour L2 (#E9D7D7)
The red outline colour is L1 (#882A28)
The red stripes in the letter are colour L3 (#B5332D)

Once the outline is done do the red stripes in the letter using #B5332D.

Select your magic wand and click inside the red stripes.
Flood fill this selection with #B5332D. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 80
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your L1 (#882A28)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the white stripes.
Flood fill this selection with #FFFFFF. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 80
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your L2 (#E9D7D7)
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Step 5: Putting them together.
Open a new image 200 x 100 transparent.
Copy and paste each letter as a new layer onto this canvas. 
Arrange them to your liking, overlapping as much or as little as you like.
Once you are happy with the positioning, you can add a drop shadow to each layer if you wish, them merge visible, crop and save.
