Pixel Artist Bear

This tutorial was written by Monti on November 15th 2010. It's concept is copyrighted to Monti. Any creation you make from my ideas are yours. You may print out this tutorial for your own personal use, but please do not copy it in any way to put online, pass out or rewrite without my permission or worse yet attempt to claim as your own.

For this tutorial you will need 

Paint Shop Pro

The Following Colour Chart
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.
Ok we are ready to start.

We will be doing this pixel in 2 layers starting with the bear on the top layer. This allows the shading to work evenly and for you to move things around at the end if you wish.

REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN 

Artist Bear

Step 1: - Bear Outline
We will be be making the Artist Bear shown above. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
I have done the bear outline in 3 parts.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
The colours used for the outline are listed below.

Bear Outline: #955A38 (Colour 1)
Inner Ear Outline#E67566 (Colour 2) 
Muzzle outline#F4A57E (Colour 3)
Mouth and Nasal area#6F452B (Colour 4) 
Nose and Eyes#000000 Black
Highlight on Nose and Eyes#FFFFFF White
T Shirt Outline#623878 (Colour 5) or a darker colour of your choice. 
Paint Palette Outline#8A6A2C (Colour 6) 
Paint Brush Handle#5A4210 (Colour 7) 
Paint Brush Tip#AEAEAE (Colour 8) 
Paint#FB55D2 (Colour 9) or a colour of your choice.

Open a new image 300 x 200 transparent. 
Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the outline colour chart (#955A38) and start at the top of your canvas.
Start with the bears head and begin drawing your outline.
When the outline above is done continue with the outline using the count below. The outline below has been resized a lot so you can see it clearly. 
The parts coloured in pink are the parts you have already drawn from the outline above.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.

Step 2: Bear Fills
The Following Colour Chart 
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside bears head. 
Select colour 1 (#DB9160) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 21
Shadow colour: Use your bear outline #955A38.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the left outer ear. 
Select colour 1 (#DB9160) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 6
Shadow colour: Use your bear outline #955A38.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 

Repeat for the right outer ear.

Select colour 1 (#DB9160) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Shadow colour: Use your bear outline #955A38.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select colour 1 (#DB9160) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection.

Shadow colour = Use your bear outline #955A38.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select colour 1 (#DB9160) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Blur: 17
Shadow colour: Use your bear outline #955A38.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 

Repeat for the right leg.

Select your magic wand and click inside the left inner ear. 
Select colour 2 (#F3ADA4) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your inner ear outline #E67566.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 

Repeat for the right inner ear.

Select your magic wand and click inside the bears muzzle. 
Select colour 3 (#FCD9C7) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your muzzle outline #F4A57E.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the bears t shirt. 
Select colour 4 (#B38BC7) on your Fill Colour Chart or a light colour of your choice and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 22
Shadow colour: Use your t shirt outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the paint palette. 
Select colour 5 (#CCA458) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 22
Shadow colour: Use your paint palette outline (#8A6A2C).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside both parts of the paint brush handle as shown below.
Select colour 6 (#A07450) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: -2
Horizontal: 2
Opacity: 100
Blur: 8
Shadow colour: Use your brush outline (#5A4210).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the paint brush tip as shown below.
Select colour 7 (#D3D3D3) on your Fill Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your brush tip outline (#AEAEAE).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the paint on the tip of the brush and the paint drip. 
Select colour 8 (#FCBEED) on your Fill Colour Chart or a light colour of your choice and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your paint outline.
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Once your bear fills are finished. add a new raster layer. 
Set your paint brush to Round, Size 4 and add about 6 different colour brush marks over your paint palette as shown below. 
Go to Adjust - blur - Gaussian Blur - 1. 
Merge visible the paint and the bear layers and save as a psp file for now.

Easel
You will need the following colour chart
Save and then open in PSP
Of course you are free to use any colours you want.

Step 3: Easel Outline
After hiding the bear layer add a new raster layer and name it easel.
We will be be making the Easel shown in the tag. The outlines below have been resized a lot so you can see them clearly. 
I have done the easel outline in 2 parts.
To make this easier I have numbered all pixels over 1.
The colours used for the outline are listed below.

Main Easel Outline: #795D21 (Colour 1)
Clip Outline: #808080 (Colour 2)
Paper Outline: #C0C0C0 (Colour 3)

Select the brush tool with the following settings.
Size: 1 - Hardness, Opacity and Density: 100 
Zoom in to about 800% - 1000% 
Set your foreground to colour 1 on the fill colour chart (#795D21) and start at the top of your canvas.
Start drawing your outline.

When the outline above is done continue with the outline using the count below. The outline below has been resized a lot so you can see it clearly.

Step 4: Easel Fills
When your outline is complete, select your magic wand with the following settings and click inside the pole at the top left of the easel. 
Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 100
Blur: 4
Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect. 
Repeat for right pole.

Select your magic wand and click inside the easel but outside the paper on the main part of the easel. 
Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the rectangle at the bottom of the easel. 
Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Blur: 3
Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).

Repeat for right easel leg.

Select your magic wand and click inside both sections of the middle leg - above and below the horizontal bar. 
Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Opacity: 100
Blur: 7
Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select colour 4 (#B89B62) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Shadow colour: Use your easel outline #795D21 (Colour 1).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the horizontal bar of the clip at the top of the easel. 
Select colour 5 (#ACACAC) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected.

Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 5
Shadow colour: Use your clip outline #808080 (Colour 2).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Select your magic wand and click inside the paper on the easel. 
Select colour 6 (#FFFFFF) on your Colour Chart and flood fill this selection. 
Keep selected. 
Selections float, Effects 3D effects, Cutout with the following settings
Vertical: 0
Horizontal: 0
Opacity: 100
Blur: 12
Shadow colour: Use your paper outline #C0C0C0 (Colour 3).
Make sure fill interior with colour is UNchecked. 
Deselect.

Add a new raster layer on top of the easel and add any image or writing you want on the pixel.
I added "I ♥ Pixels".

Once you are happy with your easel unhide your bear layer and use your move tool to move the bear and easel into position. 
Use my tag as a placement guide.

Merge Visible and save as a .png.
